After Weight
Loss Surgery
Here at DHR Health Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, we’re committed to your long-term success following your ReShape® Dual Balloon surgery, gastric sleeve surgery, or gastric bypass. Our multidisciplinary team of obesity medicine physicians, mental health experts, registered nurses, dietitians, and exercise physiologist are here to help you achieve your weight loss goals.
The Importance of Post-Operative Follow-Up
Bariatric surgery is a life-changing obesity treatment that impacts your physical, mental, and emotional health. Contrary to popular belief, weight loss surgery does not actually cure obesity – success following a bariatric procedure requires patients to comply with clear post-operative dietary and lifestyle guidelines, participate in ongoing medical monitoring, and remain vigilant for signs of overeating.
We carefully monitor each of our bariatric patients to ensure their health and well-being following weight loss surgery. Post-operative monitoring includes regular meetings with our bariatric care team, lab work to check hormone and mineral levels, and tracking of weight loss. You may need to supplement your diet with multi-vitamins, calcium, and vitamins such as D, B12, and A to offset the reduced absorption of these nutrients through your intestinal tissue after weight loss surgery.
Post-Surgical Diet Planning
All types of bariatric surgery involve changes to the capacity of your stomach, and some procedures such as the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass work by restricting your food intake and impacting how your body absorbs calories.
No matter what type of weight loss procedure you have, you will need to follow a specialized lifelong diet after weight loss surgery. Your diet after weight loss surgery is designed to promote weight loss and keep you healthy. You might start out on a liquid diet for a few weeks, and slowly re-integrate soft and solid foods. You will also need to monitor your fluid intake to help prevent complications like constipation, kidney stone formation, and dehydration.
Our team of bariatric dietitians will work with you after weight loss surgery to develop a diet plan that is customized to your unique needs and preferences. We’ll teach you about the importance of eating enough protein, and help you learn what portion sizes are appropriate for you. We can also provide you with specialized menus and bariatric-friendly recipes that are designed to make your weight loss journey both successful and satisfying.
Our Bariatric Support Group
All patients who have undergone a weight loss procedure are welcome to attend our regular bariatric N.E.W.M.E Support Group at the DHR Health Bariatric and Metabolic Institute. Our support group provides patients an opportunity to connect with one another, share common experiences, and learn about the latest research into post-surgical diet and exercise for bariatric patients.
Studies have shown that patients who actively participate in support groups after weight loss surgery enjoy fewer complications and better overall outcomes than patients who do not seek aftercare support.
